8.5 Classification and Regression
Classification predicts a category (spam or not). Regression predicts a number (house price).
Chapter 8: Data and AI Algorithms
Supervised learning problems usually fall into two types. Classification answers "which group?" - spam vs. not spam, cat vs. dog, pass vs. fail. The model learns a boundary that separates the classes.
Regression answers "how much?" - house prices, temperature tomorrow, how many likes a post will get. The model learns a line or curve that fits the trend.
Quick test: if the answer is a label, it's classification. If it's a number on a scale, it's regression.
Quick check
Predicting tomorrow's temperature → regression. Predicting if it will rain → classification.
Key takeaways
Classification = predict a category
Regression = predict a number
Boundary vs. trend line
