3.4 AI vs. Machine Learning vs. Deep Learning
They're nested like Russian dolls: Deep Learning is inside Machine Learning, which is inside AI.
Chapter 3: Fundamentals of AI
People use these terms like they mean the same thing. They don't. Picture nested circles.
AI is the biggest circle: any technique that makes machines act smart, including old-school hand-written rules. Machine Learning (ML) is a subset: AI that learns from data instead of rules. Deep Learning (DL) is a subset of ML that uses big multi-layer neural networks.
And today's buzzy Generative AI (ChatGPT, image generators) sits inside deep learning. So every GenAI tool is deep learning, which is ML, which is AI - but not the other way around.
Flex this
Next time someone says "AI and machine learning", you can say "well, ML is technically a subset of AI" - and be right.
Key takeaways
AI ⊃ Machine Learning ⊃ Deep Learning ⊃ Generative AI
ML = learning from data
DL = ML with deep neural networks
