2.6 Theory of Mind and Self-Aware AI
These are future (or fictional) types: AI that understands emotions and intentions, and AI that's conscious of itself.
Chapter 2: Types of Artificial Intelligence
Theory of Mind AI would genuinely understand that other beings have thoughts, feelings and intentions - and adjust its behaviour based on that. Some chatbots sound empathetic, but sounding caring isn't the same as actually understanding feelings.
Self-aware AI is the final level: a machine with its own consciousness, sense of self and maybe emotions. This exists only in movies and philosophy debates right now.
Fun twist: scientists don't even agree on how to define or measure consciousness in humans, so figuring it out for machines is extra complicated.
Real talk
If a chatbot says "I feel sad", it's producing words that fit the conversation - not reporting an inner feeling.
Key takeaways
Theory of mind = understanding others' thoughts and feelings
Self-aware = conscious AI, purely hypothetical
Sounding empathetic ≠ understanding emotions
