5.1 What Is Deep Learning?
Deep learning is machine learning using neural networks with many layers. "Deep" = lots of layers.
Chapter 5: Deep Learning and Neural Networks
Deep learning is a type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks with many layers stacked on top of each other. Each layer learns something a bit more complex than the one before.
The big advantage: you don't have to tell it which features matter. Older ML often needed humans to hand-pick features ("look at edge shapes", "count words"). Deep learning figures out useful features straight from raw data like pixels or text.
It took off around 2012 when a deep network called AlexNet smashed an image-recognition competition (ImageNet). It needs a lot of data and computing power - which is why GPUs became such a big deal.
