7.5 Expert Systems
Expert systems capture a human expert's knowledge as rules so a computer can give expert-style advice.
Chapter 7: Major Areas of AI
An expert system was one of the first big commercial AI successes, especially in the 1970s and 80s. It has two main parts: a knowledge base (facts and IF-THEN rules from experts) and an inference engine (the logic that applies the rules to a new case).
A famous early one, MYCIN (1970s), suggested treatments for blood infections and in tests performed comparably to some specialists.
They're transparent - you can trace exactly why it gave its answer - but hard to maintain and can't learn by themselves. Today they're often combined with machine learning.
Key takeaways
Knowledge base + inference engine
Early commercial AI success (e.g. MYCIN)
Explainable, but can't learn on its own
