Generative AI creates new content - text, images, audio, video, code - instead of just sorting or predicting.

Most classic AI is discriminative: it labels or sorts things. "Is this email spam?" "Is this a cat?" Generative AI flips it: it creates something new. "Write me an email." "Draw me a cat in a spacesuit."

It learns the patterns of huge amounts of existing content, then produces new content that follows those patterns. It's not copy-pasting from a database - it's generating fresh outputs one piece at a time.

This is the tech behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney, DALL·E and AI music and video tools.
