2.2 General AI (Strong AI)
General AI (AGI) would be able to learn and do any intellectual task a human can. It doesn't exist yet.
Chapter 2: Types of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the idea of an AI that's as flexible as a human brain. It could learn a new language, then pick up cooking, then figure out taxes - all without being specially built for each one.
The key word is transfer: humans take what they learn in one area and apply it somewhere else. Today's AI is bad at that. AGI would be good at it.
When will AGI arrive? Honestly, nobody knows. Some researchers think a few years, others think decades, some think it needs breakthroughs we haven't imagined. Be skeptical of anyone who sounds 100% sure either way.
Real talk
When companies say "we're building AGI", that's a goal, not a product you can download.
Key takeaways
AGI = human-level flexibility across any task
The key skill is transferring knowledge
It doesn't exist yet and timelines are uncertain
