3.6 Intelligent Agents and Environments
An agent is anything that senses its environment and takes actions to reach a goal. A robot vacuum is a perfect example.
Chapter 3: Fundamentals of AI
In AI, an agent is a system that perceives its environment through sensors and acts on it to achieve a goal. The environment is everything around it.
Take a robot vacuum. Its sensors detect walls and dirt (perceive). Its brain decides where to go (think). Its wheels and brushes move and clean (act). The goal: a clean floor. Then the loop repeats.
This same idea scales up to AI agents that browse the web, write code or book appointments for you - you'll meet them again in Chapter 12.
Key takeaways
Agent = senses → decides → acts toward a goal
Environment = everything the agent interacts with
Modern AI agents use the same loop with software tools
